In this Ask Sympraxis session, Joanne Klein breaks down what “modern compliance” really means and how Microsoft Purview fits into a practical, real-world governance strategy. This is not a tool-first conversation—it’s a clear reminder that compliance starts with how you manage information, not which buttons you turn on.

Modern Compliance: More Than Regulations

Modern compliance is no longer just about retention policies and audit readiness. It’s about managing information risk across your organization while still enabling people to get their work done.

At a high level, modern compliance must:

  • Meet both regulatory and business requirements
  • Manage information risk by understanding:
    • Where content lives
    • What it contains
    • Who has access
    • How it’s being used

This now extends beyond users to include:

  • AI agents and AI-generated content
  • Privileged admin activity
  • Automated system behavior

The challenge is balancing protection vs. productivity—ensuring data is secure without blocking business operations.

Maturing Into Purview

One of the most important takeaways: you can’t layer Purview on top of a mess and expect it to fix things.

The discussion maps Purview to the Microsoft 365 Maturity Model:

  • Level 100–200: Content is scattered, loosely organized, often migrated as-is
  • Level 300: Emerging structure with consistent information architecture
  • Level 400+: Metadata, content types, and governance are reliable enough to apply policy at scale
